Though some may not like to admit, I am proud to say that I was a show choir kid. Throughout middle school and high school, I was the girl involved in anything that involved the spotlight. Singing, dancing and acting helped me get through the awkward years. When I was in school, the choir kids were unpopular and “nerds”. So when did it suddenly become “cool”?

It seems like lately every TV show and movie has a bit of singing in it. You can’t turn on the tube without seeing someone belt out their feelings and an accompanying dance troop behind them. And I am not complaining!
I have to say, the whole musical movement has made me proud that I too was once on the stage. The TV show Glee has paved the way for kids to “let their geek flag fly!” This show is so incredible because not only does it showcase today’s pop hits remixed, but they incorporate them into everyday situations that teens and even adults can relate to.

Other shows that have contributed to the singing craze on TV include Smash, The Voice, The X Factor, and who could forget American Idol?

More recently, movies like “Pitch Perfect”, “Footloose”, and “Rock of Ages” have got me singing. “Pitch Perfect” was better than expected. I have never heard an a cappella version of “The Sign” by Ace of Base, and now I am hooked. The first thing I did after seeing this flick was download the soundtrack on my iPhone.

I imagine the musical life of a leasing consultant would be similar to the Buffy Musical. Photo Courtesy of http://www.uncoolkids.com
I can only hope that this craze continues. I also hope that one day I will have my own musical dedicated to the life of a leasing consultant. I can see it now, dancing through the office in career wear singing “I got a lease!” with my coworkers harmonizing behind me. A girl can dream.

As a young lad, I was always in the church choir. As a teen, I became part of an adult singing group called the Stuart W. Smith choir. We played many local venues in the NewYork/ New Jersey area. Perhaps you have heard of Carnegie Hall, and Lincoln center in New York city. We also played local colleges, Rutgers and Princeton to name a few. And believe me, at 6′ 1″ and 225 lbs, no one called this young man a “nerd”! I never was called anything but late for dinner occasionally. That’s another story though. YEAH NERDS, we now rule the world.
