fireworks on the water    I absolutely L-O-V-E Festivals or live events!!! People always ask how I constantly have the time to go find info on just about any event our city has. Well, I live in one of the largest cities in the nation so, naturally, I’m always looking for something different to do. Going to the mall or movies is great buuuut it’s a once in awhile kind of thing. My biggest turn-this-car-around button is a huge crowd! I don’t have the patience for them! Kudos to all of you who do and can brave any sale or “new release” but I cringe at the sight of a line or a packed body-on-body aisle (unless I’m at concert!!). That is why I always have my ear to the ground and eyes peeled for any hint at something exciting and new to do! The biggest key to staying in the “know” about such things is to…

lottery-winner

A girl can dream, can’t she?

The question has been asked a million times “What would you do if you won the lottery?” And if you are the big winner of the May 18th, 2013 Powerball lottery…call me, maybe? What I really want to know is – Would you help others, other than just helping yourself?

By “others” I mean, people in need. Not just paying off your family’s debt or buying your best friend that dream car they’ve been drooling over since they were ten. Actually helping the organizations that create opportunities for the underprivileged that really want to do good in the world. If you’re anything like me, you’ve traded in the nightly news broadcast for more healthier programs such as “Secret Millionaire”, “Shark Tank”, and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. These shows always get me daydreaming about what I would do if I had the wealth.

(This is where you’ll have to imagine me daydreaming about what I’d do if I won the lottery)

I’d travel the world, of course hitting all the spots I’ve always dreamed of going, and while I was there, I’d make it my mission to find groups that are giving their all just to help others. I imagine myself being in an episode of the Secret Millionaire, working with the group and doing my part to help. Then, after I leave, I would secretly assist them in making their dreams and efforts a success. Why secretly? “When you give and then expect a return on your investment, you are an investor. When you give and expect public recognition in return, you are a self-promoter. But when you give only for the love of giving, you are a generous person”. – Tim Sanders, author of Today we are Rich

(This is where I wake up)

If you’re not swimming in the Benjamins, there are always ways you can help do some good in the world that will make you feel like a million bucks. An idea would be to plug into something much bigger than you. Look into the company you already work for, chances are they have their hands in something you can stand behind. Find out how you can get involved and spread the word. Take company my company for example, Camden Property Trust; we are always getting our hands into something good. http://www.camdenliving.com/about-camden/camden-news/camden-cares/index.htm

Have you ever done something secretly to help someone? I want to hear about it, I promise I won’t tell.

Back by popular demand, I am bringing you my personal top choices for movies to see this summer. Last year, I managed to make it through seeing about half of the movies on my list. This year, I hope to see more.

I am noticing a trend for summer movies- Sci-Fi, Action, and most importantly, Super Hero flicks. Who doesn’t love entering a world of fantasy where men and women with super powers exist? Call me a nerd, but I plan on making a point to see the Sci-Fi movies or the romantic comedies.

Do your weekly team meetings look a lot like a scene straight out of “Office Space”? Just take these steps once a week and it should cure your ordinary rash of weekly meetings.

STEP ONE: WAKE UP!

Do whatever it is that gets you focused. Whether it is a caffeine enhanced beverage, early morning workout or a high five in the face, get ready to feed your brain with great information.

STEP TWO: Be Prepared

In the words of Camden Brushy Creek’s Community Manager, Joseph Menchaca, “I’m prepared because I don’t have to be, I don’t have to be because I am prepared”. “Say What Now?” What it breaks down to is, always be conscious of the activity going on around you. Know what your competition is doing, always be aware of the trends happening around you and most importantly, know where you stand in the mix of it all. Have your topics ready to discuss. In our office we have a shared outlook calendar that we enter topics to bring up during our “Family Meeting” Days.

STEP THREE: Get Involved

Right about now that caffeine is kicking in and you may want to run through your topics and move on to the next one so you can get to your desk to check Facebook. Facebook can wait – this is the time to build up excitement about your team goals and to go around the room for input.

STEP THREE ½: Don’t be a Debbie Downer

Or how I’d like to put it, “Dream Killer”- If you have an objection, determine (to yourself) if it’s a major foreseen obstacle that will certainly affect the issue that is being discussed.  If so, voice an idea on how you will overcome this hurdle and open the floor for other solutions.

STEP FOUR: Goof Off

The best team building exercise, in my opinion, is to goof off.  The “How much you wanna bet?” conversation is always a winner. This involves having an off-topic conversation that calls for a Wikipedia search. A funny YouTube video or a good prank is another favorite. For example, pouring water into a team member’s plastic desk organizer and placing it in the freezer. This prank just so happened to be pulled on me. Hi-lar-ious… Our most recent favorite is the “Heads Up” app. Whatever it is, it’s always a good meeting when everyone leaves well informed and with a smile on their face.

Follow these best practices and you’re on your way to a having an all-around healthier “family meeting”.

Project:  Everyone Deserves to Ride!

So recently, I rediscovered my love for riding bikes.  My wife, kids and I will ride our bikes throughout all of the neighborhoods nearby for a fun little adventure through Henderson and Las Vegas.  None of us ever knew exactly where we were going or where we would end up.  Sometimes my wife and I will take some of the paved trails that are hiding throughout the cities.  It has become a great way to blow off steam, as well as get some good exercise in lieu of going to the gym or working out at home.  This got me thinking: I am very lucky to be able to do this with my family, or even by myself whenever I want.  Not everyone is able to ride bikes whenever they want to because; let us face it; bikes are expensive at times.  Even the cheap ones are still pricey for someone somewhere.  I thought, then, that maybe I should figure out a way to get bicycles in the hands of everyone who wants to ride.  Whether it is for recreation or pure necessity, everyone should have a bike.  I would bet (more…)

I was sent a BuzzFeed titled “The 26 Most Annoying Things about Working in An Office”, in my email today. At first glance, it is hilarious. There are things on the list that most people have to deal with. Being in the United States, we are not always apt to brewing tea, but we are most certainly coffee addicts. The last one to use up the coffee and not auto-refill would make me angry. I have to say, I am partial to drinking Starbucks frappucinos over regular brew coffee in a pot.

The one that stood out the most to me was number 26, “coworkers who are permanently stressed”. According to my comrades, I am that number 26 person. And I have to agree with them, I find myself stressed to the max on a regular basis.

Working in the apartment industry, floor plans, appliances, light fixtures, and cabinets are always on your brain. I love talking to new people that come to the community, as well as existing residents about how they decorate their homes. Camden is flexible with lease terms, which is great for the residents building homes. I have seen residents come and go and show pictures of their new dream homes. I get ideas on how I would like to build my dream home. I am not quite ready to build a house of my own just yet, but I have found a solution to fill my home building urges.

For many of us graduating was the most exciting and stressful time in our lives. Whether you are graduating from High School or College it’s a major life changing experience. You might be a little unsure how to prepare for your first year in the real world. This is where I come in and help! Hopefully my tips that I learned from experience will help you feel more comfortable going into this new chapter of your life.
graduation

Decide where you want to live
This is the time in your life when you can experience new places. If you are not sure where you want to live pick your top three places and narrow it down from there. Or if you left home and went to school out of the state or city now might be a great time to move back closer to family. The options are endless it’s your decision.

Using Social Networking
I think it’s pretty clear that most graduate’s first goal when out of school is to land a job! Using networking through contacts that you have made is a great way to potentially find a job. That could mean going to grab a coffee or lunch with a previous employer. Just have faith in yourself; you might be surprised with how many opportunities there really are for you.

Interviews and resumes
Now it is time to prepare for potential interviews. Once you start applying to places the interviews will start rolling in. Make sure your resume is updated with your most recent accomplishment, previous employments and education. Wearing appropriate attire to an interview can make it or break it. Always look clean and professional. Try on what you are planning on wearing the night before that way you won’t feel overwhelmed the day of your interview. Also prepare for your interview, (more…)
