Does anyone know of a holiday that is not actually a holiday in America? It’s Saint Patrick’s Day! Although March 17th is technically a holiday in Ireland, it’s not an official U.S holiday which makes it the most buzzed about non-government sanctioned holiday in the United States!
(Right up there with good ole Mardi-Gras)
In case you’ve been living under a rock for…well, your entire life, St. Patrick’s Day is a day when EVERYONE claims to be Irish, wears green and most importantly drinks green beer. Did you know that approximately 34 million Americans have Irish ancestry? Yep! According to the 2003 US Census. That’s almost nine times the population of Ireland, which has 4.1 million people. Over the years, St. Patrick’s Day has become associated with pots of gold, green shamrocks, dancing leprechaun’s, four leaf clovers and plenty of Irish singing! Speaking of clovers, did you know that Irish legend says that each leaf of the clover means something: the first is for hope, the second for faith, the third for love and the fourth for luck. Only a few people actually have a clue about St. Patrick and why we celebrate this day. For Starters, the real St. Patrick wasn’t even Irish! He was born in Britain! Ha! But that’s neither here nor there. What really matters here is that America loves green beer, dancing leprechaun’s and pots of gold… enough said! Don’t ask questions!
Feeling blue with no plans for the big green day? Are you a Camden resident/fan living in or around San Antonio? If yes, you’re in LUCK! Festival of Music, food and green fun! Floats release 110 pounds of environmentally friendly green dye into the San Antonio River!
